Thanksgiving is a time for gathering with loved ones, enjoying a delicious meal, and reflecting on what we’re thankful for. But amidst the cooking, traveling, and celebrating, safety should remain at the top of the list. To help ensure your Thanksgiving is memorable for all the right reasons, here are a few simple safety reminders to keep your home, family, and guests safe this holiday season.
1. Stay Alert in the Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of Thanksgiving festivities — and one of the busiest places in the house. With multiple dishes cooking at once, it’s easy to get distracted. Never leave food unattended on the stove or in the oven. Keep flammable items like dish towels and oven mitts away from open flames and make sure pot handles are turned inward to prevent accidental spills or burns.
2. Keep Kids and Pets at a Safe Distance
Little ones and furry friends are naturally curious, especially when the delicious smells start filling the air. Create a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least three feet around the oven and stove. This helps prevent accidental burns, spills, or trips while cooking.
3. Practice Fire Safety
Thanksgiving is one of the top days for home cooking fires. Before the big day, test your smoke alarms to make sure they’re working properly, and keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. If you plan to deep-fry a turkey, always do so outdoors, away from the house, and follow manufacturer instructions carefully. Never put a frozen turkey in hot oil.
4. Travel Safely
If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving, plan ahead and take your time on the road. Buckle up, avoid distractions, and don’t drive drowsy or impaired. Check weather forecasts and road conditions before you leave and allow extra travel time so you can arrive safely and stress-free.
5. Be Mindful with Food Safety
Proper food handling is key to keeping everyone healthy. Thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, not on the counter, and cook it to an internal temperature of at least 165°F. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours to prevent foodborne illness — and enjoy those turkey sandwiches safely the next day!
A Safe Holiday is a Happy Holiday
By taking a few extra precautions, you can keep Thanksgiving filled with joy, laughter, and gratitude — not accidents or emergencies. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
